How could this happen to me? What is Creosote?

Creosote, specifically coal-tar creosote, is a type of preservative used to prevent wood from rotting. It was used at the local wood treatment site to treat wooden rail ties at a site owned by Union Pacific. The site is located near the historically black neighborhoods of the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens. Union Pacific discontinued its use of creosote at the Englewood Railyard in 1980 however, regulatory and law enforcement authorities now believe that the creosote has seeped into the ground and formed a plume that now sits underneath an estimated 100 properties.

The problem was first identified, when a Texas State Department of Health Services identified a higher than average number of lung and bronchus, esophagus and larynx cancers in 10 areas near the railyard from 2000 to 2016. This higher than average concentration of cancer cases is what’s known as a cancer cluster.
