Refinery Plant Explodes Causing Damages
At least two employees and one contractor have been injured after the TPC refinery plant explosion rocked the area around Port Neches Wednesday morning. According to reports, the explosion occurred around 1 a.m. at the TPC refinery plant located off Highway 366 near Merriman.
In addition to injured workers, residents living within a half-mile of the TPC refinery plant have been evacuated, and residents within a mile of the plant are encouraged to evacuate. Authorities are concerned that butadine is being released into the surrounding environment. Short-term exposure to butadine may irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) show that butadine is harmful if inhaled.
Alarmingly, local news reports suggest windows were blown out in homes up to 10 miles away from the TPC refinery plant.
Jefferson County is in the process of setting up shelters for people in the evacuation zone. Families outside the evacuation zone are encouraged to shelter-in-place.
