2 Deaths and 30 Injuries at LyondellBasell La Porte

On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, a chemical leak at a LyondellBasell facility near La Porte killed two people and hospitalized at least 30.

 

The La Porte chemical leak caused about 100,000 pounds of mixture containing of flammable, corrosive chemicals to enter the surrounding community. Methyl iodide, hydrogen iodide, and methyl acetate were also involved in the leak. These chemicals are known to severely burn skin, and when inhaled, are toxic. The facility on Miller Cut-Off Road sits near several other chemical plants. The number of injuries remains uncertain.
